Patient Education

Common Conditions Explained

๐ŸŒ€

Chronic Sinusitis

Inflammation of the sinuses lasting more than 12 weeks. Far more than a "blocked nose" โ€” it affects sleep, smell and quality of life.

  • Facial pressure or fullness around cheeks and eyes
  • Thick nasal discharge or post-nasal drip
  • Reduced or absent sense of smell
  • Nasal blockage, fatigue and disturbed sleep
๐Ÿ‘‚

Hearing Loss

Affects all ages with many treatable causes โ€” from damaged hearing bones to nerve damage. Early diagnosis gives the best chance of recovery.

  • Frequently asking people to repeat themselves
  • Difficulty on the phone or in noisy environments
  • Ringing or buzzing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • In children: not responding to sounds or speech delay
๐Ÿซ

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea

Repeated airway collapse during sleep causing breathing pauses. Most people don't know they have it. Untreated, it significantly raises cardiovascular risk.

  • Loud, persistent snoring
  • Waking up gasping or choking
  • Unrefreshing sleep despite 7โ€“8 hours
  • Daytime sleepiness โ€” even while driving
๐Ÿ”ต

Thyroid Lumps & Goitre

Most thyroid nodules are benign but all need evaluation. Large goitres can compress the airway. Dr. Singh has specific expertise in large retrosternal goitres.

  • Visible swelling at the front of the neck
  • Difficulty swallowing or a choking sensation
  • Change in voice or hoarseness
  • A rapidly growing or hard lump
Everyday ENT Care

Common Procedures We Perform

  • Loss of smell โ€” can indicate sinus disease or rarely, more serious conditions
  • Frequent nosebleeds, especially in adults over 40
  • Recurrent sinus infections (more than 3โ€“4 per year)

Dr. Singh has pioneered endoscopic sinus surgery and performs advanced skull base procedures including pituitary tumour surgery via the nose.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Throat & Voice Problems

โš  Urgent if difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Hoarse voice lasting more than 3 weeks โ€” must be evaluated even if painless
  • Difficulty swallowing, especially if worsening or with weight loss

Dr. Singh performs microlaryngoscopy, transoral laser surgery and a full range of sleep apnoea and airway procedures.

๐Ÿฉบ Neck Lumps & Thyroid

โš  All new neck lumps need evaluation
  • Any new lump in the neck lasting more than 2โ€“3 weeks โ€” do not wait
  • Thyroid swelling visible or felt at the front of the neck
  • A lump that is growing, hard, or fixed to underlying tissue
  • Neck lump with weight loss, night sweats or fatigue
  • History of smoking or alcohol with a new neck lump

Dr. Singh trained in head and neck oncology at Tata Memorial Hospital and Memorial Sloan Kettering. He specialises in minimal incision thyroid, parotid and neck surgery.

๐Ÿ‘ถ Children's ENT Problems

โšก Early treatment significantly improves outcomes
  • More than 4โ€“5 ear infections in a year โ€” may need grommets
  • Hearing loss in a child, or suspected hearing loss in an infant
  • Mouth breathing, loud snoring, or restless sleep
  • Very large tonsils causing breathing or swallowing difficulty
  • Speech delay โ€” always rule out hearing problems first

Dr. Singh has a keen interest in paediatric ENT and conducts cochlear implant surgeries and endoscopic paediatric sinus procedures.

๐Ÿ˜ด Sleep & Breathing Problems

โšก Often underdiagnosed โ€” worth investigating
  • Loud snoring that disturbs your partner or household
  • Waking up gasping or choking โ€” a sign of obstructive sleep apnoea
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness despite adequate sleep hours
  • Morning headaches or dry mouth on waking
  • In children: behavioural issues or poor school performance linked to poor sleep

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea carries serious cardiovascular consequences if untreated. Dr. Singh performs a full range of sleep apnoea and snoring surgeries.

You will leave with a clear plan. Ask what your diagnosis means in plain language, what happens if left untreated, and what all your options are โ€” medical and surgical.

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ In the Days Before

  • Stop blood-thinning medications as advised โ€” usually 7โ€“10 days prior
  • Inform Dr. Singh of ALL supplements โ€” fish oil and vitamin E also thin blood
  • Stop smoking at least 2 weeks before surgery
  • Complete pre-operative blood tests and ECG on time
  • Arrange for someone to take you home

๐ŸŒ™ The Night Before

  • Fast from midnight if surgery is in the morning โ€” follow specific instructions given to you
  • Shower and wash your hair
  • Remove nail polish โ€” needed for oxygen monitoring
  • Leave jewellery at home
  • Get a good night's rest

๐Ÿงณ What to Pack

  • Comfortable loose clothing โ€” shirt that buttons at the front
  • All current medications in original packaging
  • Insurance and hospital registration documents
  • Phone charger and something to read
  • A trusted person to stay with you

โ“ Questions to Ask

  • What exactly will be done during the procedure?
  • What are the risks specific to my case?
  • How long is recovery and what are the restrictions?
  • When can I return to work, driving and exercise?
  • What improvement can I realistically expect?
01

Immediately After (Recovery Room)

Grogginess, mild sore throat and nasal congestion are all normal. Most ENT day-cases go home within 24 hours.

02

First 48 Hours at Home

Rest is essential. Sleep with head elevated, do not blow your nose forcefully for at least 2 weeks after nasal/sinus surgery, avoid heavy lifting, take pain medication as prescribed, eat soft cool foods.

03

Warning Signs โ€” When to Call

Call Jupiter Hospital immediately if you notice: heavy persistent bleeding, fever above 38.5ยฐC, severe uncontrolled pain, sudden severe headache, or difficulty breathing or swallowing.

04

Follow-up Appointments

Not optional. These allow Dr. Singh to check healing, remove dressings, and confirm the surgery achieved its goal. First follow-up is typically within 5โ€“7 days of surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions Patients Often Ask

See an ENT if: any symptom has lasted more than 3โ€“4 weeks without improvement, you have had more than 3โ€“4 ear or sinus infections in a year, you have a new lump in the neck, unexplained hoarseness lasting over 3 weeks, or any sudden change in hearing. Your GP handles acute infections โ€” an ENT handles persistent, recurrent or complex problems.
Not necessarily. Many people have a deviated septum and never notice it. Surgery (septoplasty) is recommended only when it causes significant symptoms โ€” persistent nasal obstruction, recurrent sinus infections, or snoring. The decision is based entirely on how much it affects your daily life.
Occasional light snoring is common during a cold. However, loud habitual snoring โ€” with pauses in breathing, restless sleep, mouth breathing, or daytime sleepiness โ€” is not normal and needs evaluation. Enlarged tonsils and adenoids are the most common cause and the treatment is straightforward.
FESS is performed entirely through the nostrils โ€” no external cuts or visible scars. Done under general anaesthesia. Post-operative discomfort is manageable with standard pain medication. Most patients return to light activity within a week.
Most neck lumps in younger people are benign โ€” swollen lymph nodes from infection are the most common cause. However, any lump persisting beyond 3 weeks, growing, hard, or in a person over 40 (especially with smoking or alcohol history) must be promptly evaluated. When caught early, most head and neck cancers are highly treatable.
It depends on the cause. Smell loss due to nasal polyps or sinusitis often responds well to surgery or steroids. Post-viral smell loss (common after COVID-19) can recover spontaneously; olfactory training has shown benefit. Early evaluation gives the best chance of recovery.
A cochlear implant bypasses damaged inner ear hair cells and directly stimulates the hearing nerve. Surgery takes 2โ€“3 hours. After rehabilitation and device mapping, most recipients โ€” including children โ€” achieve significant improvement in hearing and speech understanding.
Most thyroid nodules (over 90%) are benign and don't require surgery. An ultrasound and sometimes a fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy assess the risk. Surgery is recommended if there is suspicion of malignancy, compressive symptoms, or if the nodule is very large.
A quick in-clinic procedure where a thin telescope is passed into the nostril after a local anaesthetic spray. Takes 3โ€“5 minutes. Most patients find it mildly uncomfortable at worst. It provides far more information than physical examination alone.
Seek emergency care immediately if dizziness is accompanied by: sudden severe headache, double vision, slurred speech, weakness or numbness in the face, arm or leg, or difficulty walking โ€” these could indicate a stroke. Isolated vertigo without neurological symptoms is most often inner ear related.
Tinnitus is the perception of sound (ringing, buzzing, hissing) when none is present externally. It can occur with or without hearing loss. While there is no universal cure for tinnitus, many management strategies exist and underlying causes should always be investigated.
No. You can book a direct consultation at Jupiter Hospital without a referral. Bringing any previous investigation reports or letters from your GP is strongly recommended โ€” it saves time and gives Dr. Singh the most complete picture from the first visit.
